The Model Patent System

prop's answer to selling custom Blockbench models on the server: sell in-game patents so each model has one owner.

Event ASMP S1 31 Dec 2021

In late December 2021 prop was travelling with very limited internet, unable to play online games or join servers properly. He announced that he would spend the time modelling things in Blockbench for the server’s resource pack and took requests. 1

On 31 December he raised an awkward question. Would it be acceptable to sell high-effort models, like the The Glitchpop Axe, on the server for diamonds, “instead of just making all the tags public”? 2

His answer came the same day. Instead of selling models like items, he would sell the in-game “patents” for them, so that whoever holds the patent owns that model. 3 The point was unique models for everyone, rather than everyone having access to everything. He was upfront about where the idea came from: “the patent idea was given to me by IRIS”. 4

Older models, the Glitchpop Axe among them, were not affected. The Axe has its own story in The Glitchpop Axe.
