The Axolotl VPN

From February 2023 the servers were never exposed directly: you joined through kira's WireGuard tunnel, later Tailscale.

After the Season 1 grief (The Fall) the friends were careful about who could reach their worlds. From February 2023 kira put the server behind a private network: “In order to play on the server, you will now need to connect to the axolotl VPN. You can DM me for your config.” 1 Players installed WireGuard, loaded the config and joined at an address starting with smp.. 2 The VPN host moved from vpn.xochi.space to vpn.axolotl.pink in June 2023. 3

The point was that the server was never directly exposed. prop used it as an argument against fussing over certain security fixes: “we have vpn for that only”, apart from “people with vpn file”. 4 Kira himself could skip the tunnel when he was on the home network. 5

The friends came to love it. Early on prop called it “a life saver” and “the first real useful thing that came out of the tunnel”. 6 7 In December 2024 he thanked kira for building it and called it “quite a genius system”. 8 9

It also caused grief. In May 2024 Kart could not join on two occasions, and the chat suggests the admin password was on another laptop. 10

From April 2025 kira moved everyone to Tailscale, with newcomers running a vpn add bot command and joining by hostnames like sculk.local. 11 12 Minecraft was slow to resolve the name, so the standard advice was to spam refresh: “a good 10-20 times”. 13
