kira ran the Season 1 server, and the backups were his project. On 26 September 2021 he announced that he would upload server backups on request, so people could “try stuff out in the backup before doing it on the server” 1. Later they were available by FTP, then in the browser at the server’s address 2 3.
Backups had a cost. Each one caused a roughly one-second hitch that broke AFK and redstone farms 4. After prop and IRIS complained, kira agreed to “backup once in 12hours of gameplay” and asked people not to load redstone contraptions during one 5. Even so, the chat suggests that in mid-November a three-hour playtime backup limit was still in force and could not be paused 6.
The backups also saved the day, in a way. Posted copies carry the dates 15 September, 7 October, 27 October and 19 November 7. The 7 October copy is about 20 days older than the 2b2t grief, and the chat suggests it was the “20-day-old backup” restored on 7 November, the origin of The Alternate Timeline. The 27 October copy was named “axolotl: 2b2t edition” 8.
In December, prop posted a notice that the backups channel held only the older ones, with the newest behind a link, a quality-of-life change by kira 9.
