The Power Cut Saga

The summer 2023 run of outages when ASMP Earth lived on kira's home hardware and the power kept going out.

ASMP Earth ran on kira’s own hardware at home, which meant that every power cut became a server event too. Over the summer of 2023 the chat filled up with the same words: “server down.”

It began on 11 July, when kira worked out that the “backup mustve run out of power” 1. Four days later the server died again, and prop pinged kira with “server down pls restart” 2. kira could not do anything about it from where he was, and told prop to ask Levi instead 3. Meanwhile GrimWatch and kira argued over whether the fault lay in the motherboard or the PSU. kira’s ruling was “it’s psu issue not mobo” 4, and he floated using a Raspberry Pi or Arduino to switch it on 5.

The Pi plan came back on 25 August after a power fluctuation: “before I leave home I’ll setup raspberry pi to auto/manual turn on server” 6. prop wanted to know how the Pi itself would get power, and IRIS suggested a start-up program instead 7.

The outages had real costs. On 29 August the server restarted after a cut and rolled back about five minutes 8, which cost IRIS a wither skeleton skull 9. In early September the cuts came repeatedly, one restart attempt broke the latest backup 10, and prop noted that it kept dying at 6:45 in the morning 11. IRIS offered to host the server himself, but kira declined.

The last entry in the saga is 5 October, when a cut “went longer than expected and backup ran out” 12.
