The anvil dupe was a bug from Minecraft 1.17. As prop later explained it, the trick was to rename an item at an anvil that was about to break while your inventory was full: the anvil broke, and a copy of the item dropped on the ground 1 2. Any item could be duplicated this way.
When Season 1 launched in July 2021, prop went hunting through the changelogs. He wondered whether the dupe had been fixed in 1.17.1, tested it, and reported “doesnt seem like it”, then added the verdict “costly” 3 4: expensive in anvil uses, but still a dupe.
A few days later he warned kira about a damaged anvil, and kira’s reply summed up the server’s mood: “I hope they fix this shit in 1.17.2” 5 6.
