ASMP Limbo was pitched as a stop-gap. prop’s summary in October 2023: “its limbo season” and “nobody cares if u play seriously or not” 1 2. The world would not reset even if you skipped two months, because “the point in this server is that its just going to be here”, unless twenty people suddenly turned up 3 4. It ran Create, so progress was quick.
The culture settled into something slow and goalless, with technical projects on one side and passion projects on the other. In November prop concluded, “man i like this server… nice stress relief server we have” 5 6.
Why it failed
When Limbo wound down in April 2024 (see The Great Limbo Post-Mortem), kira gave four reasons 7:
- “you added create, some people can’t be bothered”.
- “you made too much progress by yourself, others feel like peasants when starting out”. Prop admitted it took him three months to build his Nether portal 8.
- “lack of lore for this season”, understandably given the lack of players.
- “not enough brainwashing people to play on the server” 9.
The plan after
Prop’s answer was “option 2”: a normal vanilla server on the latest version, with a public seed and everybody staying within 1,000 blocks of each other 10 11. kira offered the world border, “like 2k x 2k at the start”, and agreed that “option 2 sounds better” 12 13. Limbo ended in The Lava Cast.
