“Potato SMP” was the name of the Mekanism season (Potato SMP: Season 2 "Mekanism!"), and the friends simply never let go of it. Kart was still using it in mid-June 2021 (“not potato smp”) 1, and in early July he was recruiting for the Create Together server with “anyone wanna join pototao smp” 2 and “anyone wnna join potato smp and play with me” 3. The Discord bot’s .ip embed, which StonerBob had set up, listed the new server under the same title 4. When the bot first went live it even dug up an older “Kelp SMP” entry, which kira dismissed as “oof old stuff” 5.
When the 1.17 season (Axolotl SMP Season 1) was on the way, kira asked prop to retire the name:

6 The bot became “Axolotl”, but the embed itself did not follow. 0uttadaworld, arriving to the chat, joked “so u went from kelp to potato” and introduced himself as summoned by “the kelp master himself” 7 8. The chat suggests an earlier kira server or bot may once have been called Kelp, though nobody confirms it.
By October 2021 the .ip command still said Potato SMP. kira noted “still says potato smp” and admitted he was “too lazy to change it” 9 10. prop’s verdict closed the matter:
