Smelting was a matter of honour in Axolotl SMP Season 1, and in late 2021 two designs went head to head.
On 12 November kira announced “time to build a super smelter” and showed a wide pit cut between prismarine and sand walls. 1
On 1 December prop answered with a new array, shown in complementary shaders 2, then in BSL, with iron blocks “for flex”. It was ilmango’s Perfect Furnace Array, 46 furnaces in all with 23 on each side, run entirely on hoppers.
kira laughed in “elegant 64 furnace array” 3, and prop laughed back with “46 furnace perfection from ilmango”. 4 kira’s retort was that without minecarts the design was slow, and that the fuel mattered more than the array. When abi wanted a 64-furnace version of prop’s design, prop explained that changing the count would make it inefficient. 5
The two designs did not travel equally well. IRIS copied kira’s and reported “I tore it down” when it would not work, while kira insisted it ran very well for him. 6 See also Furnace Array Complete and Super Smelter.
